By winning the Monte Carlo tournament, Fabio Fognini entered the history of Italian tennis, becoming the first Italian to triumph in the final of a Masters 1000. The last victory by an Italian on Monegasque clay dates back to 1968 by Nicola PietrangeliThe last finalist, however, had been Fognini's current coach, Corrado Barazzuttiin 1977.
This success also allowed Fognini to consolidate his leadership in the ranking of Italian tennis players who have collected the most prizes in their careers. The victory at Monte Carloin fact, ensured that the 31-year-old Sanremo a €958,000 cheque, pushing his annual takings (currently) up to $1.37 million, or around €1.22 million. Last season Fognini had collected $2.088 million, or about €1.85 million.
So far in his career, he has collected $12.8 million (€11.4 million) in prizes, a figure that puts him in 46th place in the historical prize pool ranking, which is topped by Novak Djokovic with $129 million, followed by Roger Federer at USD 123 million.
The second Italian in this special ranking is Andreas Seppi, 68th with USD 10.1 million (approximately EUR 8.98 million), followed by Simone Bolelli 163rd with USD 5 million (EUR 4.5 million) and Paolo Lorenzi 178th with $4.6 million (EUR 4.1 million).
