Good news for the pairing Milan-Cortina. Calgary, one of the three candidates to host the Olympics 2026, is expected to withdraw after citizens voted against the Canadian city's plans to host the Games. In the referendum, the No votes prevailed with 56.4%, as early polls had already predicted.
A vote that, while not having the weight of the bond, will have a strong impact on the decisions of the city council of Calgary who, in all likelihood, will officially announce the withdrawal of his candidature on Monday.
This increases the chances for the Italian project, which now has as its only rival Stockholm. The Swedish capital, however, does not have the full support of the local government and, more importantly, still has no national government after the last general election.
At the moment, therefore, the duo Milan-Cortina appears favoured to host the Olympics 2026.
