SIAE Entertainment Yearbook: 2.4 billion turnover for football

As every year, theSIAE Performing Arts Yearbook referring to 2017 data. According to the findings, Italians' expenditure on entertainment increased by 0.71%, with a growth in the sector's turnover of 4.45% but a decrease in activities and admissions of 2.56% and 4.31% respectively. The average ticket price, on the other hand, increased by 5.25%.

The analysis of the entire economic sector of the entertainment industry shows that the highest turnover is registered by sport, +43.54%, with box office (+15.61%) and turnover (+12.75%) on the rise, but with a reduction in audience expenditure (-0.82%) and in the number of performances (-1.70%).

The sports sector, however, generates a turnover of EUR 2.977 billion, corresponding to 35% of the turnover of the entire entertainment sector. According to the report, 'this value, which is already considerable, does not, however, express all the revenue generated by the sporting activity, because some important contracts (sponsorship, advertising and the sale of television rights) may not have been accounted for by the organisers in time for this publication and, therefore, the relevant amounts have not yet been acquired by SIAE.”

In the area of sport, football obviously registers astounding numbers: it alone produces 80.55% of the entire sector, or EUR 2.397 billion. The public's expenditure in this sport amounts to EUR 712.3 million, or 78.71% of the total value of the Sport macro-aggregate.

Another interesting figure, again referring to football, is the differential between Turnover and Audience Expenditure, which represents the amount of income from sponsorships, the granting of television rights and advertising. The value is 1,685.6 million Euro, the highest recorded in the entire entertainment sector, and represents 70% of the sport's revenue.

The average admission cost for the football sector also increased, standing at EUR 15.10, up 10.8% compared to 2016. Again, football had the highest percentage growth compared to the previous year.

More generally, theSIAE Performing Arts Yearbookshowed a slump in cinema, which lost over 14 million spectators compared to the previous year, mainly due to the boom of Quo Vado in 2016 (seen by almost 10 million spectators), and theatre, which recorded a negative sign in all indicators. Opera (+8.68% in the number of performances), exhibitions, and light music concerts grew, with an increase in admissions of 3.19%, box office spending of 10.16%, and turnover (+9.17%, thanks to the Vasco Rossi concert in Modena).
